The Proust & Tin Poppy Questionnaire Photographer Phil Cates of P.Tography
Next up for the Proust-ish Questionnaire is Salmon Arm local Phil Cates, owner of P.Tography
I am a Okanagan/Shuswap wedding/family photographer located in beautiful Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada. I happily serve all of the interior of British Columbia with ambition, class, and care. My studio is everywhere and my heart, (and portfolio), reflect my love and passion for the world that surrounds me and my fellow brothers and sisters that I share it with.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
My idea of perfect happiness is being forever grateful for all that I have in life. I am so fortunate to have 4 beautiful children and my lady by my side, to be able to pursue my passions and to live where I want - right here in the Shuswap. It sounds cheesy, I know, but that IS happiness to me.
What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fear is drowning. I would not want to go out like that.
Any unusual advice you give to couples pre shoot?
Warning: I may fart but only in with the hopes of getting you to smile or react! (I then explain it works for my kids, but I never end up farting.)
Which living person do you most admire?
I admire my children. Every day they grow up wishing they could be like me, even though they have no idea just how much I wish I could be like them!
What is your current state of mind?
My Current state of mind is one of preparation. Wedding season is almost here!
What is the quality you most like in a man?
Guys who are into the idea of being a modern man, and not yesterday's man, are the guys I get along with. (I look forward as much as I can. The only thing you gain from looking backward, are lessons learned).
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
I like Ladies like the one I have!
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
"basically" & "Perspective"
When and where did you shoot your first wedding?
I shot my first wedding in Edmonton Ab back when I was 25, with a point & shoot camera. Looking back on those images, the composition was really good, however I over-edited the snot out of those photos.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is becoming a father and learning to be better with each passing day because of them.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
I hope I come back as a Tree.

It's hard for me to pick a trend I like because many of them really look cool, depending on the photo and if it enhances the emotion of said photo
Which wedding trends are you seeing that is not your style?
I don't really find dark and appealing photos to resonate with me. I'm a look on the bright side of life kind of guy so it's hard for me to relate with it. I get why people do though, and I can respect their appreciation for that style. What is your most marked characteristic?
I am a goofball, I love to laugh.
What three words most describe your photography aesthetic?
Colorful, Candid, Cinematic

Hero of Fiction? Shoot, All of my heros are real! If I had to chose, I'd have to go with Superman. (Ya I know, real original right?)
Which historical figure do you most identify with?
I know alot of history but I honestly cannot think of anyone that I am like. Is that weird? Who are your heroes in real life?
My heroes are people like Elon Musk, Edward Snowden, Astronauts, Objective Journalists, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking, Parents, and Anyone who has ever saved a life at the risk of their own. How would you like to die?
I would like to die in my sleep. If I get deathly Ill, I have floated the idea of packing my bags, flying to the Philippines, going sky diving and not pull the chute. Sounds grim, I know, but if I'm gonna go, I'm doing it on my terms if I can help it.
